The financial aid for Greece during the Euro crisis was tied to strict austerity measures, which resulted in economic hardship for many Greek citizens, including increased unemployment, loss of income and reduced social services. Angela Merkel was seen as one of the main advocates of the financial rescue packages, and her visits to Greece were accompanied by large protests. This poster, issued by the main left-wing opposition party, Syriza, was displayed at a demonstration to protest a visit by Angela Merkel in 2014. It shows both Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. Syriza’s leader, Alexis Tsipras, was elected Prime Minister in 2015. He remained in office until 2019.
