Abstract

Whereas the number of traditional families (headed by married couples) is on the decline in Germany, more and more children are growing up in non-traditional families. Married couples and single-parent families have long been part of everyday life in Germany, but public opinion still remains divided on the issue of same-sex couples with children (“rainbow families”). For this reason, in May 2007, the Lesbian and Gay Association of Berlin-Brandenburg [Lesben- und Schwulenverband Berlin-Brandenburg or LSVD] launched the campaign “A family is where there are children!” The association printed posters and brochures in German and Turkish to promote equal treatment for gay and lesbian couples with children. This photo shows (from left to right) Constanze Körner, director of the Rainbow Families project at the LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg, Heidi Knake Werner (PDS), senator for integration, labor and social affairs in Berlin, and Alexander Zinn, managing director of the LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg, in the Berlin office of the LSVD on May 7, 2007.
