Abstract

Rural traditions such as rustic village festivals are still being upheld in Germany. Here, a group of rural women on a decorated wagon take part in a festive procession during the Third Brandenburg Village and Harvest Festival in the community of Pinnow (Uckermark). Rising above their wagon is a harvest crown, a wreath made of ears of grain; as part of rural custom, the harvest crown is mounted on the village square to symbolize the community’s dependence on a good harvest. The program of this festival also includes horse shows, carriage and obstacle races, vintage car and cattle shows, a farmers’ market, and the election of a harvest queen.
