Abstract

Otto Hahn became famous for his 1938 discovery of nuclear fission (in collaboration with Fritz Strassmann, Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch). After the war, he was temporarily interned along with nine other German nuclear scientists at the English estate Farm Hall, where he learned that the Americans had dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was extremely upset by this news and henceforth opposed the military use of nuclear energy and atomic weapons.
