Abstract

During his state visit to the Federal Republic, Erich Honecker held talks with Chancellor Kohl, Bundestag President Philipp Jenninger, and representatives of the parliamentary factions. These discussions were held in Bonn on September 7 and 8, 1987. Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker (right) welcomed Honecker (left) in his offices at the Villa Hammerschmidt on September 7. They discussed various questions concerning disarmament, with both men advocating the continuation of the inter-German dialogue on the basis of the Basic Treaty. After his visit to Bonn, Honecker met with major figures in the West German economy in Cologne and Essen, and then went on to Düsseldorf, Trier, the Saarland, and Munich to meet with Minister Presidents Johannes Rau (North Rhine-Westphalia), Bernhard Vogel (Rhineland-Palatinate), Oskar Lafontaine (Saarland), and Franz Josef Strauß (Bavaria).
