Abstract

The “Robotron” Kombinat [combine] was founded in the GDR at the end of the 1960s. It was responsible for developing and manufacturing data-processing and office machines. Over the course of the 1970s, it became evident that Robotron computers could no longer keep up with the accelerating pace of Western innovation. Within the Eastern economic zone, however, the GDR had great success in exporting Robotron technology. The photograph below features a Robotron computer exhibited at the Leipzig Spring Trade Fair in 1970.
