Abstract

The ideal of the car-friendly city shaped efforts to rebuild large West German cities in the postwar era. As part of this movement, inner-city expressways were extended and connected to the country's highway network, thereby creating long-distance links between cities. The photo shows the expressway interchange at Charlottenplatz in Stuttgart, the city where the car manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Maybach are based. Photographer unknown.
