Abstract

This video produced by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper from 2017 looks back on Angela Merkel's first three of four terms in office as German Chancellor and captures twelve key moments of her chancellorship. These include her handling of the financial crises in 2008 and 2009, the Euro crisis of 2010, and her decision to admit refugees fleeing various conflict zones in the summer of 2015 for humanitarian reasons. She also discusses the clouded relationship with the USA following Donald Trump's election in 2016. The video begins and ends with a hand gesture typical of Angela Merkel, the so-called Merkel rhombus [Merkel-Raute], which by chance has become one of her trademarks.
