Abstract
In the days after the surprising opening of the Wall, hundreds of thousands of East German citizens streamed across the border into West Berlin and the Federal Republic. A festive mood prevailed in Berlin and in both German states. In the image below, a West German border guard hands flowers to his East German colleagues in a gesture of friendship and peaceful change.
