Abstract

Through a joint resolution by French president François Mitterrand and German chancellor Helmut Kohl, the Eurocorps was created in 1992 and commenced operations in 1993. In addition to Germany and France, Belgium (1993), Spain (1994), Luxembourg (1996), and Poland (2022) also belong to Eurocorps. Moreover, the NATO countries Greece, Poland, Italy (since 2009), Romania (since 2016) and Turkey, and the EU member state Austria send personnel to the Eurocorps headquarters. Eurocorps headquarters sent forces to serve at the headquarters of missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina (SFOR), Kosovo (KFOR), and Afghanistan (IFOR). The heart of the corps is the German-French Brigade (founded in 1987) and a multinational command support brigade. The shield-shaped Eurocorps insignia consists of a sword on a stylized European map surrounded by the stars of Europe. Eurocorps is integrated into the NATO Response Force.
