On October 14, 1990, the five new federal states held their very first Landtag [state parliament] elections. Taken at a CDU campaign event in Borna (Saxony) in October 1990, this photograph shows the top CDU candidate for the Landtag elections, Kurt Biedenkopf. The CDU emerged as the clear victor in the elections in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, and Thuringia. As a result, the West German candidate Biedenkopf became prime minister of Saxony. [Note: the CDU poster on podium reads: "Yes to Germany. Yes to the Future."]
