Abstract

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced in a session of the Bundestag on February 27, 2022 that two liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals would be built in Brunsbüttel and Wilhelmshaven in the short term to secure Germany’s energy supply in light of the sanctions against Russia. On December 17, 2022, the first LNG terminal in Germany, which was built within seven months, was opened in Wilhelmshaven on the coast of the North Sea. The picture shows Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics Minister Robert Habeck, Lower Saxony’s Minister President Stephan Weil and Finance Minister Christian Lindner during the opening of the terminal. The floating terminal ship can be seen in the background; this is where the liquefied gas is regasified before it is pumped ashore via a connecting pipeline.
