Abstract

The German Council of Economic Experts, which advises the government, issued a report warning that the country will soon be confronted with an ageing workforce and an ageing industrial sector. It proposes radical policies such as raising the pension age, encouraging higher labor immigration and reforms to boost the AI sector. In this interview with Deutsche Welle Ulrike Malmendier, a professor of finance at UC Berkeley and the Haas School of Business and one of five members of the expert panel, expresses her concerns that Germany is not responding quickly enough to these challenges.
