Abstract

On June 2, 1878, a second attempt in less than a month was made on the life of Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797–1888) as he rode in his carriage (without police protection) on Unter den Linden in Berlin. Wilhelm was seriously wounded by shotgun pellets that struck his neck, shoulder, and arm. An extended convalescence was required. The heavy military coat and the helmet he wore likely saved him from more serious injuries, which presumably is why the bloodstained coat shown in this photo has been preserved.
