Abstract

This woodcut comes from Passionary of Christ and Antichrist, a famous series by the Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). In the images below, Cranach contrasts Christ, who humbly washes his disciples’ feet, with the pope, who arrogantly allows his foot to be kissed. Woodcut, 1521.
