Abstract

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, folk songs were popularized and spread by traveling musicians performing at markets, fairs, and festivities. The musicians sometimes sold printed sheets of song lyrics so that audiences could memorize them. This love song dates to the early seventeenth century.
