This etching, which depicts the arrival of guests (presumably nearby gentry) at a noble house, is supposed to illustrate polite behavior towards one’s neighbors. Polite behavior included bowing – and the artist was careful to illustrate two variations on bowing, one on foot and one on horseback. It also included pleasant conversation, as carried out by the women in the right foreground. Copperplate engraving by an unknown artist published in the 1750 edition of Franz Philipp Florinus, Oeconomus prudens et legalis. Oder Der kluge und rechtsverständige Haus-Vater [Oeconomus prudens et legalis. Or the Generally Prudent and Judicious Housemaster].
