Abstract

This plate, attributed to Christian Friedrich Herold (1700-1779), dates from 1730-1735. Herold was a noted porcelain painter, famed for his chinoiserie: a style of European art anchored in representations of Asian scenes. This plate came from the famed Meissen porcelain works, established by Augustus the Strong, King of Saxony, in 1710. The first porcelain works in Europe, Meissen produced luxury items such as this plate for the Saxon court and other members of the nobility.
