Abstract

Having broken through the barriers in front of the Erfurt train station, an enthusiastic crowd waves to the third floor of the Hotel Erfurter Hof, where Chancellor Willy Brandt has appeared in a window. Unhappy with their own leadership, East German citizens chanted “Willy, Willy!” Not wanting to offend his hosts, Brandt responded with understanding yet restrained gestures.
