Abstract

As a scholar, politician, and intellectual, Ralf Dahrendorf was particularly influential in shaping the debates about the liberalization of West German society in the 1960s and 1970s. His 1965 book, Society and Democracy in Germany, denounced the “structural inability of democracy” to give scientific underpinnings to the need for liberal reforms.
