Abstract

This map shows the integration of the two German states into Europe’s military blocs at the height of the Cold War in 1961. Whereas the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) belonged to the Western military alliance NATO, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was part of the Warsaw Pact, which was founded as a counterweight to NATO.
