Abstract

This cartoon from the February 19, 1928 issue of satirical magazine Kladderadatsch, which had a carnival theme, presented the French occupation as simply another in a long parade of historical attempts to annex the Rhineland region to France. Beginning with the Thirty Years' War (represented here by the year 1634, in which Louis XIII concluded the Treaty of Paris against Germany), through the incorporation of Strasbourg by Louis XIV in 1681, the beginning of the Seven Years' War in 1756, the French Revolution (1793) and the Napoleonic Wars (1805-1813) to the First World War, France is depicted with various masks, all of which pursue the same goal, namely to invade Germany. The cartoon’s ironic caption stated: “France needs security so that it may continue its historical raiding and burning of defenseless Germany in the future.”
