Abstract
Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was the biggest film star Universum-Film
AG (UFA) ever produced. The Blue
Angel, directed for UFA by Austrian-American director Josef von
Sternberg, was the film that started Dietrich's career. Based on
Heinrich Mann’s novel Professor
Unrat, it was one of the first sound films made in Germany and
became an international success. An English-language version was shot
simultaneously. Dietrich played a femme fatale, a role in which she
would be cast repeatedly. After the success of
The Blue Angel, she followed von
Sternberg to Hollywood, where she continued her successful career. This
still photo shows Dietrich as night club singer Lola Lola performing the
film's hit song ”Falling in Love
Again.”
