Abstract

Same sex marriage became legal in Germany in 2017. The Bundestag passed the legislation on June 30, 2017, with a majority of 393 to 226 votes. Germany was the first Central European and the fourteenth European country to legalize same-sex marriages nationwide. From 2001 until 2017, Germany had recognized registered life partnerships for same-sex couples. Based on opinion polls, the vast majority of Germans support same-sex marriage.
