Abstract

This brief video produced by Deutsche Welle and published a week before the referendum on Brexit was held in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2016 explains the consequences of the United Kingdom’s leaving the EU (Brexit) would have for the UK and the EU. The video mainly focuses on the negative consequences for the British economy but also warns of the danger Brexit might hold for the project of European integration. After a narrow majority had voted for Brexit, negotiations between the UK and the EU on the terms for Britain’s withdrawal from the EU began in June 2017. They became drawn-out due to the complexities of the issues and quarrels within the British parliament. Britain did not actually leave the EU until January 31, 2020. Thus far, economists broadly agree that Brexit has had a largely negative effect on the British economy.
