Abstract

German military troops were stationed in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021, making it the Bundeswehr’s largest foreign deployment to date in terms of cost and soldiers involved. The war in Afghanistan 2001-2021 was the first and – so far – only alliance case under Art. 5 of the NATO Treaty. European allies began to join Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) (not limited to Afghanistan) in October 2001. German soldiers took part in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and also participated in the OEF with combat missions of the Special Forces Command (KSK) in Afghanistan. This photo shows German soldiers patrolling the village of Rem Saki.
