Abstract

In 2015/2016, over one million refugees, migrants and other people seeking protection arrived in Germany. In 2015, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) registered around 890,000 people seeking protection, many of whom had fled from the civil war in Syria. By 2018, over 70% of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in Germany have gained residency permits granting them the right to work. Today, close to one million people who fled from Syria live in Germany. A growing number of refugees from Syria who have settled in Germany have also been naturalized. In 2021 alone, about 19.100 Syrians gained German citizenship.

This photo was taken at a “flash mob against racism” event at the Berlin central station in fall of 2015 to support refugees under the motto: Standing Together, Singing Together. Persian-German actress Jasmin Tabatabai, the Syrian Band Rasif, and hundreds of singers, choirs, travelers, and passersby sang “Schrei nach Liebe” (Cry for Love), a song by the German Band Die Ärzte.
