Abstract

Soccer, the most popular sport in Germany by far, is no longer an exclusively male domain. According to surveys, women and girls now make up 22% of stadium visitors. Some of those fans can be seen in this photo, taken during a game hosted by FC Schalke 04, a team based in Gelsenkirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia). But women are also more than ardent fans of the sport; the German national women’s soccer team has made a name for itself with international successes – also in the World Cup. Despite a few prominent figures, women still have a tough time holding their own in the male-dominated field of sports journalism. Photo: Sven Simon.
