Abstract

This clip by Der Spiegel surveys a cross section of citizens who live in Hamburg, one of the most multicultural cities in Germany. At the time the video was filmed about one third of the residents were classified as people with a migrant background; this number has since increased to nearly 40 per cent (2023). The official definition of a migration background counts people who were not born in Germany or who have at least one parent who was not born in Germany. Yet, the video shows that migration backgrounds differ widely. Each interviewee talks about what it means to be German, what it means to be an immigrant or the child of migrants, and how they feel about their identity in relation to these labels.
