Abstract

On July 1, 1990, the monetary, economic, and social union between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic took effect. This photograph shows a crowd of shoppers peering in the windows of the Centrum department store on Dresden's Altmarkt [Old Market Square]. Inside, the first Western goods were unpacked and put on display in the shop windows.
