Abstract

This video looks back on the first year of the governing coalition between the CDU/CSU and FDP. The FDP was the partner of choice with whom Angela Merkel and the CDU/CSU wanted to form a coalition after the 2009 federal elections, but its government work was characterized by conflicts and quarrels. Party leader and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle in particular came in for criticism, but the FDP's overall poll ratings also fell. During the remaining term of government, the FDP was unable to regain the trust of the electorate, as the result of the 2013 federal election showed. For the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, the party was unable to overcome the five percent hurdle and thus was not represented in the Bundestag in the following legislative period.
