This photograph shows the March 14, 1880, issue of the principal organ of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), Der Sozialdemokrat. Also shown is the postal sleeve addressed to the party’s de facto leader, August Bebel (1840–1913). Bebel’s copy had been confiscated by the Berlin police on the basis of the Anti-Socialist Law.
