Abstract

At the Gotha Congress the two wings of the German socialist movement—the followers of Karl Marx (1818–1883) and of Ferdinand Lassalle (1825–1864)—forged a fragile unity and took the name Socialist Workers’ Party of Germany [Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands or SAPD]. The banner at the top reads: “In honor of the elders, to teach the youth! [Den Alten zur Ehr, den Jungen zur Lehr!”] In addition to Marx and Lassalle, the postcard features portraits of the delegates to the congress. It was postmarked August 7, 1908, meaning that it wasn’t mailed until decades after the congress took place.
