Abstract

On September 21, 1848, the radical democrat and revolutionary Gustav Struve (1805–1870) staged an uprising in the city of Lörrach in Baden, proclaiming that the German Republic had arrived. When his attempt was crushed by authorities, he went into exile in Switzerland. Struve emigrated to the United States after another abortive uprising in the spring of 1849.
