Abstract

The reformed Prussian army, joined to the Landwehr (territorial reserve), transformed Prussia into a “nation in arms.” This military strength helped Prussia defeat Napoleon in 1813-14, in alliance with troops from Britain, Austria, and Russia. The image below depicts the departure of Landwehr troops into the field after a blessing at a church in Königsberg, East Prussia. On the right, a Jewish soldier is seen off by his apprehensive parents.
