Abstract

During the Cold War West Germans sent packages with coveted goods, such as chocolate or coffee, to friends and relatives on the other side of the Iron Curtain. This practice helped maintain emotional and family ties across the East-West divide. It also showcased the rising prosperity of the Federal Republic. This image shows a re-creation of a so-called West package [Westpaket], which includes a pair of Levi’s jeans, at an exhibition at the Levi Strauss Museum in Buttenheim. Western jeans were particularly sought after in the GDR, which started producing its own brand of jeans in 1974.
