Abstract

The announcement for the Monday peace prayers at Nikolai Church in Leipzig was attached to the symbol of the GDR peace movement “Swords to Ploughshares” [“Schwerter zu Pflugscharen”]. The peace prayers began in early September 1989 and evolved into large weekly demonstrations on the square outside the church. They continued until after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. This photo was taken at a program commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig in October 2008.
