Abstract

The word “peace” was weaponized by the GDR leadership and used in propaganda against the West. It was also used in education, as this photograph of an East Berlin school makes clear. The poster reads “Peace is beautiful.” In the 1980s, an oppositional peace movement developed in the GDR in connection with the Protestant church. The movement took up the theme of peace but did so in a way that was critical of the system.
