The weaving workshop was one of the school’s most productive. Mostly frequented by women, the workshop experimented with both traditional and industrial weaving techniques as well as with new synthetic fibres, which were mostly used for industrial purposes. In color and formal vocabulary, the Bauhaus fabrics clearly reflect the influence of Bauhaus masters Johannes Itten, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky. The carpet shown here is by Benita Koch-Otte, who studied at the Bauhaus from 1920 until 1925. It is an example of the one-of-a-kind textiles produced by the weaving workshop in its early phase. Koch-Otte went on to head the weaving workshop at the Bethel Foundation, a charitable psychiatric hospital.
