Abstract

German cities experienced dramatic growth from 1875 to 1914. In search of industrial employment, Germans flooded into urban centers, where they developed a sense of collective identity that was closely tied to occupation and economic status. This photograph from 1910 shows three generations of a working-class, urban family. Workers often dressed like members of the bourgeoisie, albeit with markers, such as caps, that distinguished them from more affluent Germans.
