Abstract

Based on John Tenniel’s famous Bismarck caricature “Dropping the Pilot” from the year 1890, this caricature from the New Zealand Herald comments on German reunification. In this updated version, it is the Allies (represented by Charles de Gaulle, Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill) who disembark the German ship of state, while the new captain, Chancellor Helmut Kohl, looks on with consummate ease. Caricature by Laurence Clark.
