Abstract

Although the last decades have brought dramatic social change to Germany, many beloved traditions have persisted. For example, allotment gardens (also known as Schreber gardens [Schrebergärten]) have existed in Germany in various forms since the nineteenth century. Today, there are more than a million of them, and 15,200 allotment garden associations are currently registered with the Federal Association of German Gardening Enthusiasts (figures from 2010). This photograph shows a Schreber garden in the “Railway Employees Gardening Enthusiasts” club in Frankfurt (on the Oder).
