Abstract

This 1983 photograph of a West Berlin garden colony shows a temporary outdoor storage area in the shadow of the Wall. An umbrella, a ladder, a bicycle, a trash can, and a drying rack with clothes can be seen in the image, along with other household items. The “Kolonie an der Kleinbahn” allotment gardens, located in West Berlin’s southeastern corner, bordered the Berlin Wall. First introduced in the 19th century in the wake of industrialization and in the context of the life reform movement [Lebensreformbewegung], garden colonies or Schrebergärten, where people can rent small plots of land with small cottages for gardening and recreation, continue to be popular throughout Germany today.
