Abstract

The German military has been present in Kosovo since 1999 as part of NATO’s KFOR mission. While media and public attention have mostly shifted away from Kosovo since the end of the war, KFOR peacekeeping troops remain in the region to this day. In 2010 Germany began reducing its troop size from 50,000 to 5,000. As this Deutsche Welle report from December 2010 shows, ethnic conflict between Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo continues to persist, so an end to the KFOR mission does not seem likely any time soon. At present, about 3,800 KFOR troops from 27 countries still remain in Kosovo to ensure peace.
