Abstract

German language courses for migrants have existed for many decades. In 2004, the scope of these courses was expanded with the introduction of new integration courses. Integration courses consist of two parts: 600 hours of language instruction and 100 hours of orientation to living in Germany. The curriculum was developed, and the program is financed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. Both parts of the course end with an exam that can be repeated. They are offered by over 1,300 local language schools. This photo shows a teacher of a German language class for migrants at a Volkshochschule (adult education center) in North-Rhine Westphalia.
