Abstract

In contrast to the immense scale, complexity, and modernity of industrial production depicted in his famous work The Iron Rolling Mill (1875), this relatively small painting by Adolph Menzel is devoted to the survival of guilds and older ways of doing things: the workplace shows a shop were everyone knows each other.
