Abstract

This allegorical mural was dedicated to the twin ideals of peace and unity, or, more specifically, to the Kaiser Proclamation of January 18, 1871. The central panel shows Kaiser Wilhelm I, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (the future Kaiser Friedrich III), Bismarck, and Chief of the Prussian General Staff Helmuth von Moltke. The artist, Hermann Wislicenus (1825–1899), produced other large-scale paintings in the 1870s and 1880s, many of which integrated classical figures and the heroes of German unification.
