Abstract

This montage illustrates typical scenes from the last Reichstag election campaign fought under the Anti-Socialist Law, during the winter of 1889–90. It was published just two days after the main ballot on February 20, 1890. The captions read (clockwise from top): speakers of various parties; unauthorized posting of placards; urban listeners; invoking house rules (to clear an assembly hall); rural meeting; and maiden speech. Entitled From Berlin Election Rallies, this woodcut is based on a drawing by Carl Koch and first appeared in the Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung, no. 94 (February 22, 1890), p. 178.
