Abstract

Based on a painting by Christian Ludwig Bokelmann (1844–1894), this woodcut depicts a Reichstag voter’s moment of decision—the instant just before he enters the polling station when he must choose to accept a preprinted ballot from the representative of one of the parties seeking his support. The high degree of public interest in the process of Reichstag voting is captured well by the artist, who properly includes women and children among the interested parties, even though they did not have voting rights themselves.
