Abstract

The caption to this Kladderadatsch caricature reads: “One eagerly waits to see to whom the pasha will throw his handkerchief.” The women awaiting Pasha Bismarck’s decision represent Germany’s main political parties: (from left) the Progressives, the National Liberals, the Center, and the Conservatives. As a last resort, Bismarck has his letter of resignation tucked into his sash.
